St Michael's Cricket Club

Opponent : United Social
Date : 22 May 2004
Venue : Weston Favell Upper School
Result : Match abandoned

In scenes of pure farce, United Social refused to play this league match because, in their opinion, the pitch 'was not safe'.

When the teams arrived at WFUS, a pitch had not been cut and prepared as expected. However a petrol mower was quickly obtained from the Saints and the previous week's pitch was re-cut and marked by 2pm. However Social were still unhappy, and insisted that if the game went ahead then St Michael's should bat first and lose overs as a result of the late start. This was obviously unacceptable and so the game was called off.

The pitch of course was perfectly safe and playable, as demonstrated by the St Michael's players having a double wicket competition afterwards.

The matter has now been referred to the League Committee. Let's hope that appropriate action is taken.
